Atlassian Update: Jira and Confluence Cloud are HIPAA compliant

Great news: Atlassian announces that Jira Software Cloud and Confluence Cloud are now HIPPA compliant! With this announcement, Atlassian reaches another major milestone and achieves the goal of meeting important data security and compliance requirements.

What is HIPPA compliance and why is it important for a lot of organizations?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) is a federal law crafted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Within the federal law, policies regarding the security, privacy, and confidentiality of personal health information are established, which are enforced through the following protections:

  • Designation and role definition of a HIPAA Privacy and Security Officer.
  • Assessments for appropriate remediation or mitigating controls for the addressable requirements of the HIPAA security rules
  • Annual HIPAA security attestation, gap assessment, and security risk analysis
  • Periodic review of HIPAA privacy and security policies and procedures
  • Privacy and security awareness content related to the protection of PHI.

Why a lot of organizations benefit from the HIPAA-compliance

Many Atlassian customers across healthcare and other industries will now be able to take advantage of Atlassian Cloud, as HIPPA compliance was previously required for limitless benefits. Until now, HIPAA compliance was a major barrier for Atlassian Cloud prospects. With the ability to meet the security requirements related to personal health information, organizations in these industries are now allowed to deploy that information in Atlassian Cloud.

How to make use of the HIPAA Compliance

Atlassian customers impacted by HIPAA compliance who wish to use cloud products must first purchase an Enterprise Plan and enter into a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) that covers appropriate cloud products/services for new or migrating customers. Additionally, partners should work with their EA's to ensure that their customers also have the appropriate authorization.
